Early Freeze on Big Field

The earth denatured
the land drifted
from shoddy quilt
to crisp virgin cotton
the November plough
muffled for warmth
wrinkles on pallid skin
etched by deep slumber

the rutted track dimpled
with pocks of crazed glass
frozen relief maps
estuaries and fjords
brittle edges unshivered
by stamping boots
unsullied by brown ooze

the echo dulled
perspective flattened
sight dazzled
almost overwhelmed
by a fuller view
a lucid dream
of perfect beauty.
